SIGNAL 006

EXPLOITABILITY AUDIENCES DISTRIBUTION

A work ends. A community can remain.

The audiovisual industry is used to building projects that have a beginning and an end. But some of the most valuable things a work can create —relationship, community, continuity— do not necessarily have to end with it.

A film ends.

A series ends.

A season, a podcast or a documentary ends too.

But the relationship they build with an audience does not necessarily have the same expiry date.

For a long time, we have thought about content primarily as a finished product: develop an idea, produce it, distribute it and find the people who want to watch it.

The creator economy is making another possibility visible.

A work can also be the beginning of something.

It can bring people together around a shared interest. Create language, habits and common references. Generate a relationship that continues when the episode ends or when the launch campaign disappears.

At that point, value is no longer contained only within the piece itself.

It also begins to exist between the people who have decided to remain around it.

That does not mean every audience is a community. Nor that every project should become a platform, a product or a permanent business.

It means something simpler: content can end before the value it has managed to create.

And that difference matters.

Because an industry accustomed to starting almost from zero with every new project may discover that some relationships, knowledge and connections do not need to disappear when the next one arrives.

Perhaps one of the most interesting ways to think about the life of a work is not simply to ask how long its exploitation can last.

But what remains when the work has already ended.

What if part of the value of a work lies precisely in what it manages to keep alive after it?
