SIGNAL 005

AUDIENCES CULTURE DISTRIBUTION

When watching is no longer enough

Never have we had so much content available without leaving home. And perhaps precisely because of that, part of the audience is once again valuing something it cannot get from the sofa: being there, with others, when something happens.

It has never been so easy to watch a film.

We can choose from thousands of titles, pause them, resume them, watch them alone and access them from almost anywhere.

And yet, part of the audience most accustomed to that availability is once again finding value in something apparently less convenient: travelling to a cinema, sharing a schedule and experiencing a story surrounded by strangers.

Perhaps because watching and being there are not exactly the same thing.

When access stops being scarce, other forms of value become more visible.

Presence.

Ritual.

Anticipation.

The conversation before and after.

The feeling that something is happening at the same time for everyone.

Personal screens have extraordinarily expanded our ability to consume stories. But they have not necessarily eliminated our need to share them.

In fact, the networks that allow us to discover a film, follow the conversation or feel that we might be left out of it can also end up pushing us towards a physical experience.

Digital and physical experiences do not always compete. Sometimes they feed each other.

This changes the question about the future of a window such as cinema. Perhaps its distinctive value does not lie only in offering a larger screen or better technology, but in making watching feel like an event again.

Because when almost everything is available at any time, something that requires being in a place, with others, at a specific moment can acquire new value.

Perhaps the future of some experiences does not depend on making access even easier, but on giving presence meaning again.

What happens when what is truly scarce is no longer content, but the experience of sharing it?
